After reading Sueblimely and Randa's posts, I decided to turn off the 'nofollow' in my comments. It is an attribute that can be added to websites that tells search engines not to 'follow' links to external sites so that they do not gain any advantages in the ranking process, for example in blog comments.
This was originally designed to help stop comment spam, but it doesn’t work. What it does is remove some of the incentive for your readers contribute to your site by commenting on your posts. 'Nofollow' is good for the search engines but not for bloggers who are trying to increase their readership, develop their network and are already taking measures to stop spam.
Turn off 'nofollow'. Show your commenters that you appreciate them. Depending on the blog platform you’re on, you can install a plugin (for WordPress), or disable it (for Moveable Type user), or modify your template (for Blogger tips).
Allow comment moderation in your blog settings so that all comments have to be approved before you publish them and use spam filtering methods.
But.. Please only take off 'nofollow' if you are confident about implementing the hacks and being able to use counter-spam tools correctly.

Well done! I think our blogging readers deserve to have some link-love.
I have just removed nofollow and put dofollow on backlinks and comments on my blogs.
